Story and Plot (1965, Calcutta)
Ashok Maity has come to Calcutta from Meerut for some work. He goes to a Dharamshala and asks for a room to stay but he does not get it. A man named Gangapad is following Ashok from Howrah station. When he sees Ashok not finding a room, he goes to Ashok and says that he can live with him in his house. He is doing this because Ashok's face resembles his brother a lot.
He takes Ashoka to his house and then says that he has to go out, so Ashoka can stay here as long as he wants. He also tells Ashoka to look out of the house window from time to time. A man with a red coat will appear there.
Gangapad leaves and then when Ashoka is looking out of the window, someone shoots at him. The bullet escapes touching his head and he is admitted to the hospital.
When the police inspector comes along with Byomkesh to take his statement, he tells them all the incidents. When the police collect information about Gangapad, it comes to know that he used to work as Sardar Melter in an iron factory and before that Naresh Mandal was working on this post who is currently in jail.
अशोक महती किसी काम से मेरठ से कलकत्ता आया है। वो एक धर्मशाला मे जाकर रहने के लिए रूम माँगता है मगर उसको नही मिलता। गंगापद नाम का एक आदमी हावड़ा स्टेशन से ही अशोक का पीछा कर रहा है। जब वो देखता है अशोक को कमरा नहीं मिला तो वो अशोक के पास जाकर बोलता है की वो उसके साथ उसके घर मे रह सकता है। ऐसा वो इसलिए कर रहा है क्युकी अशोक की शक्ल उसके भाई से बहुत मिलती है।
वो अशोक को अपने घर ले जाता है और फिर बोलता है की उसको बाहर जाना है इसलिए अशोक जब टाक चाहे यहाँ रह सकता है। वो अशोक को ये भी बोलता है की समय समय पर घर की खिड़की से बाहर झाँकते रहना। वहाँ एक लाल कोट वाला आदमी दिखाई देगा।
गंगापद चला जाता है और फिर जब अशोक खिड़की से बाहर की ओर देख रहा होता है तो उसके ऊपर कोई गोली चला देता है। गोली उसके सर को छूते हुए निकल जाती है और उसको अस्पताल मे भर्ती किया जाता है।
पुलिस इन्स्पेक्टर ब्योमकेश के साथ उसका बयान लेने आते हैं तो वो ये सब उनको बताता है। पुलिस जब गंगापद के बारे मे पता लगाती है तो पता चलता है की वो एक लोहे की फैक्ट्री मे सरदार मेल्टर के पद पर काम करता था और उससे पहले नरेश मण्डल इस पोस्ट पर कार्यरत था जो की अभी जेल मे है।
