Year 1959, Kolkata.
Byomkesh and Ajeeth are invited to a marriage function where he meets with a retired police inspector Neelmani. Neelmani tells him that he belongs to east Bengal but 7 years back after his retirement he shifted to Calcutta. During the discussion, he asks Byomkesh if he ever faces some challenges during a case where he could not found the culprit! After this, he explains a case which he could not solve because the person whom he was assuming the murderer was also killed.

He narrats entire story to Byomkesh and then asks him to reveal the murderer.

सन 1959। ब्योमकेश और अजीत एक शादी के समारोह मे गए हुए हैं जहां उनकी मुलाकात एक रिटायर्ड पुलिस इन्स्पेक्टर नीलमणि से होती हैं। नीलमणि बताते हैं की वो पूर्वी बंगाल से ताल्लुक रखते हैं जो की अब आकार कलकत्ता मे बस गए हैं। सात साल पहले उनका रिटाइअर्मन्ट हुआ है। वो ब्योमकेश से पूछते हैं की क्या कभी ऐसा हुआ है की आप किसी केस का हाल न निकाल पाए हों। और अपने बारे मे बताते हैं की उन्होंने अपने सामने आए सारे केसेज़ को हाल किया मगर एक केस ऐसा था जिसको वो हल नही कर पाए। दरअसल जिसको वो कातिल समझ रहे थे उसी का कत्ल हो गया।

इसके बाद वो पूरी कहानी ब्योमकेश को सुनाते हैं और फिर ब्योमकेश से पूछते हैं की वो बताए की कातिल कौन था.

Story and Plot (1958)

Byomkesh came to meet a frind in pune and from there he goes to Mahabaleshwar. The hotel owner Sohraab Homji is known to his frind who warmly welcomes him. He tells Byomkesh the he baught this hotel just 2 months back and the hotel's earlier owner were two partners, Bengali Bijoy Biswas and Gujarati Manik Mehta. Manik Mehta was also indulged into some illegal deals and police was looking for him. This was the reason he wanted to sell this hotel so he can elope. He sold the hotel to Sohraab and then an incident took place. This was heard from Bijoy's wife Hemwati that Manik Mehta pushed Bijoy into the riffle where few ferocious aminal killed and ete him. Manik Mehta then disappeared with the all the money near 1.5 lac rupee and after this incident Hemwati also left Mahabaleshwar and then disappeared. Byomkesh's friend is saying in contrast to this that this was also planned conspiracy. He also tells that the day Bijoy died the same day all money from Bijoy's account was taken out while Manik's account still has twenty thousand rupees.

ब्योमकेश अपने एक दोस्त के यहाँ पुणे आया हुआ है और वहाँ से वो महाबलेश्वर घूमने आता है। जिस होटल मे वो रुका है वो सर्दी के चलते खाली पड़ा है और वहाँ उसकी मुलाकात होटल के मालिक सोहराब होमजी से होती है। सोहराब उसको बताते हैं की उसने ये होटल 2 महीने पहले ही खरीद है और इस होटल का उससे पहले मालिक भी बंगाली ही था जिसका नाम था बिजॉय बिस्वास और इसका एक गुजराती पार्टनर भी था माणिक मेहता है।

माणिक मेहता का इसके अलावा एक अवैध धंधा भी था जिसके चलते पुलिस उसके पीछे पड़ी थी और इसी के चलते वो होटल को बेचना चाहता था मगर होटल बेचने के बाद ही ऐसा सुनने मे आया की माणिक ने बिजॉय बिस्वास को जंगल मे धक्का दे दिया जिससे उसको शेर खा गए और माणिक उसके हिस्से के भी पैसे लेकर भाग गया। हादसे के बाद बिजॉय की पत्नी हेमवती वो जगह छोड़ कर चली गई और फिर उसका पता नहीं चल पाया।

इसके विपरीत ब्योमकेश के दोस्त का कहना है ये कहानी पूरी तरह से सच नहीं है क्युकी वइजॉय के मरने के अगले ही दिन उसके बैंक से सारा रुपया निकाल लिया गया जब की माणिक के बैंक अकाउंट मे अभी भी 20000 रुपये पड़े हुए हैं।

Few small kids of a village are talking about a "Horse Ghost". They are talking that there is a horse sometimes appears in the jungle. Amrit is among them who challenges them that he is not afraid of any ghost so other kids tell him to go to the jungle if he dares. Amrit heads towards the jungle only them they hear of a gunshot. Once they reach the place they find him a pool of blood, died.

Two days after this incident, the kids go to meet Byomkesh who is there in the same village for some government investigation work. They all explain to him about Amrit's unfortunate death. In the evening Byomkesh visits the crime spot with those kids. At the same time, a man named Sadanand Sur also passes from the place. Sadanand is returning from his village and moving towards his home in the jungle. The kid tells him about Amrit's murder. After a few minutes, they all hear the sound of bomb towards Sadanand's home and when they reach there, finds Sadanand has died in that bomb blast.

गाँव के कुछ बच्चे एक घोड़ा भूत के बारे मे बात कर रहे हैं। इन्ही मे से एक बच्चा है अमृत जिससे ये लोग शर्त लगाते हैं की जंगल मे स्थित उस पेड़ तक जाकर दिखाओ तो हम मानेंगे की तुम भूत से नहीं डरते। अमृत वैसा ही करता है। वो जंगल की तरफ बढ़ता है मगर तभी सबको एक गोली चलने की आवाज सुनाई देती है। सारे बच्चे पास जाकर देखते हैं तो पाते हैं की अमृत की किसी ने गोली मार कर हत्या कर दी है।

इस घटना के 2 दिन बाद ये बच्चे व्योमकेश बक्शी के पास पहुचते हैं जो की अजीत के साथ उसी गाँव मे किसी सरकारी काम से आया हुआ है। वो सब व्योमकेश को इस हत्या के बारे मे बताते हैं। शाम को व्योमकेश उसने साथ घटनास्थल पर जाता है। उसी समय वहाँ से सदानंद सूर नामक एक आदमी अपने गाँव से वापस लौट रहा होता है। बच्चे सदानंद को अमृत की मौत के बारे मे बताते हैं। इसके कुछ ही मिनट बाद ही सदानंद जैसे ही अपने घर पहुचट है, एक बम की आवाज सुनाई देती है और देखने पर पता चलता है की सदानंद मारा गया.

रसमय बाबू शहर के बड़े ज्वेलर हैं। उनके पास एक पुश्तैनी हार है जिसकी कीमत सन 1957 मे साठ हजार के आसपास है (आज के समय मे 48 लाख के आसपास)। वो अपनी बहू उमा को बोलते हैं कि इस हार को इसके बॉक्स मे रख के ऊपर से कपड़े से सिल दे और फिर लॉकर मे रख दे। मगर तभी उनको याद आता है की लॉकर की चाभी तो उनकी पत्नी अपने साथ ले गई हैं जो की शहर से बाहर हैं, सो वो बोलते हैं की हार पैक कर के देदे वो उसको अपने पास रख लेंगे। उमा वैसा ही करती है मगर उससे पहले वो इस हार को पहन कर भी देखती हैं और उसका मन करता है की ऐसा एक हार उसके पास भी होता तो कितना अच्छा होता। उसका पति मणिमय बोलता है की वो ऐसा हार उसके लिए ला देगा।

अगले ही दिन ये हार गायब हो जाता है। रसमय बाबू व्योमकेश बक्शी को बुलाते हैं और व्योमकेश घर के सभी लोगों से अलग अलग पुचःताछ करता है।

Rasmay Babu is a known jeweler in the town. He has a patrimonial necklace whose costs are INR 60,000 (during 1957 and today it would be near INR 48 Lac). For its safety, he tells his daughter in law Uma to keep this necklace intact in its box and pack the box with a cloth and then keep that into the locker but Uma tells that her mother in law was carrying the locker's keys who is out of town, so he tells Uma to pack the necklace box and give that back to him so he will carry this until her wife comes. Uma follows his order but before packing the box he tries the necklace on her neck. She is in love with the necklace and asks her husband to make a similar necklace for her. Husband Manimay promises her to bring a similar necklace for her.

The very next day the necklace goes missing from the home. Rasmay Babu calls Byomkesh for the investigation and he talks to each person on the home including the servant Bhola.

One day suddenly a young man comes to Byomkesh's house, who tells his name Satyakam. He tells that he owns a big clothing shop named Suchitra Emporium. Apart from him, his father Ushanath Babu is a shareholder in the shop. He gives 1000 rupees to Byomkesh and says that someone is going to kill him, so he wants Byomkesh to investigate his murder once he is killed. He tells Byomkesh his date of birth and leaves.

Byomkesh and Ajith feel that Satyakam is a very spoiled boy and it is because of the antics that someone wants to kill him. A few days later, news comes in the newspaper that Satyakam has been killed. On the way to the house of Byomkesh, he finds a person who tells him that he was a very evil person.

While entering Satyakam's house, Byomkesh finds that the bottom of the main door of the house has a round silver-like paper shining. Perhaps this paper is like the paper that comes in a cigarette packet. He meets Satyakam's father Ushanath Babu and tells him that Satyakam had told him that he should investigate the case after his murder.

व्योमकेश के घर एक दिन अचानक एक यूवक आता है जो अपना नाम सत्यकाम बताता है। वो बताता है की वो सुचित्रा इंपोरियम नाम की कपड़ों की एक बड़ी दुकान का मालिक है। दुकान मे उसके अलावा उसके पिता उषानाथ बाबू हिस्सेदार हैं। वो व्योमकेश को 1000 रुपये देता है और कहता है की कोई उसकी हत्या करने वाला है इसलिए वो चाहता है की उसकी हत्या के बाद व्योमकेश उसकी मौत की तफतीश करे। वो व्योमकेश को अपनी जन्मतिथि बताता है और चला जाता है।

व्योमकेश और अजीत को लगता है की सत्यकाम एक बहुत ही बिगड़ा हुआ लड़का है और हो सकता है उसकी इन्ही हरकतों की वजह से ही कोई उसकी हत्या करना चाहता है। कुछ दिन बाद अखबार मे खबर आती है की सत्यकाम की हत्या हो गई है। व्योमकेश के सत्यकाम की घर की तरफ जाते हुए एक जानपहचान का शख्स मिलता है जो उसके बारे मे बताता है की वो बहुत ही दुश्चरित्र व्यक्ति था।

सत्यकाम के घर मे घुसते समय व्योमकेश देखता है की घर के मुख्य दरवाजे पर नीचे की तरफ एक गोल-गोल चांदी की तरह चमकने वाला काग़ज़ लगा है। शायद ये काग़ज़ सिगरेट के पैकेट मे आने वाले काग़ज़ की तरह है। वो सत्यकाम के पिता उषानाथ बाबू से मिलता है और बताता है की सत्यकाम ने ही उसको बोला था की वो उसकी हत्या के बाद केस की तफतीश करे।

Story and Plot
Deepnarayan is a known wealthy person on the city who is going through some liver related problem and being treated by Dr Parikh. After his successful treatment when he feels good he give a party to all his known person and Byomkesh along with Ajeet is also invited. Byomkesh meets with each person there and comes to know that Deep Naaryan has no successor after him and his nephew Dev Narayan will be the only person after Deep Narayan. He also meets with Deep Narayan's wife Shakuntala devi and comes to know that she is his second wife and they has a long age gap between them. Byomkesh also meets with a new police inspector Ratikant there.

The very next day after this party a senior police officer comes to meet Byomkesh and tells him that Deep Narayan passed away. Later the postmortem report reveals that he was died of a poison given to him along with his medicine's daily dose.

दीपनारायण बाबू शहर के एक रईस आदमी हैं और इनको लिवर की समस्या है. एक गम्भीर बीमारी से निकालने के बाद वो सबको पार्टी देते हैं जिसमें ब्योमकेश बक्शी को भी बुलाया जाता है. ब्योमकेश वहाँ पहुँच कर सबसे मिलता है और ग़ौर करता है की दीपनारायण की कोई संतान नहीं है और उसका भतीजा ही उसक अकेला वारिस है. इसके अलावा ये भी पता चलता है की दीपनारायण ने शकुंतला देवी से दूसरी शादी की थी और इनदोनो ने बीच उम्र का फ़ासला बहुत है. ब्योमकेश वहाँ एक नए पुलीस ऑफ़िसर रतिकांत से भी मिलता है.

अगले दिन एक सीनियर पलीस ऑफ़िस ब्योमकेश के पास आते हैं और बताते हैं की दीप नारायण की मौत हो गई है. बाद में उनकी पोस्ट्मॉर्टम रिपोर्ट से पता चलता है की उनकी मौत ज़हर देने से हुई है जो की हो सकता है उसकी दावा में मिलाया गया हो.
